Course Merchant is a popular addition to Brightspace for eLearning providers who need to sell courses online. Brightspace eCommerce can be fine-tuned by Course Merchant’s attention to detail when setting up customers’ stores and by the powerful feature set to be found in the administration area. Customers can use the administration area to set up discounts, create bundled course packages, set date-dependent pricing, add and remove products from the store, edit product information as it changes, and create voucher/coupon codes for promotional discounts.

Our external web stores operate in ways that today’s shoppers expect. The ecommerce flows are familiar to online shoppers from using other ecommerce environments. The purchaser selects a product from the SEO-friendly store catalog, adds it to the shopping cart, continues shopping if desired, then passes to Checkout, registering with their user data if it is their first visit to the store. Then they enter their card or PayPal details into the payment gateway(s) chosen by the customer. Course Merchant integrates with any hosted payment gateway, such as Authorize.net, WorldPay, Moneris, Sage Pay, and many others.

Flexible deployment and customization: an example

We have worked with one of the largest professional associations in the United States to build a busy store connected to the Brightspace Learning Environment. They offer over 120 courses leading to professional qualifications and we have built their categories and products into their store catalog. We have integrated the store with their membership database to allow progressive study, so that a learner cannot enroll on a course until any prerequisite courses have been passed and certificates awarded. We have also built a full integration with a tax and accounting system to aid the customer’s internal administration. We pride ourselves on our consultative approach which can provide this level of custom development and integration with third party applications.

We work closely with D2L on their customers’ Brightspace implementations to ensure that their eCommerce store integrates perfectly with the course content in the Brightspace Learning Environment. Keywords in course descriptions make the store catalog search engine-friendly, boosting web visibility and therefore sales. This is in contrast with course content within the Learning Environment, which is often hidden from search engines.
